Winter might invite hibernation, but it’s also a great time to hit the road. Landscapes are especially atmospheric, there are fewer crowds and plenty of activities to rug up for. But however spontaneous you like to be on your adventures, it’s important to plan for a safe trip with a vehicle check and the right car accessories and parts before you head off.
The checklist
If your vehicle is due for a service, make sure you book it in prior to travel. Even if your car has been serviced recently, you’ll need to do a pre-trip check, including:
- Check all lights are working and replace globes if needed.
- Check and replace wiper blades if necessary.
- Make sure the battery has plenty of fluid and there are no signs of corrosion.
- Check brakes are responding properly.
- Check and top up fluids, including oil and coolant/anti-freeze.
- Check tyre tread and make sure your spare is in good condition.
- Clean the windows inside and out.
- Make sure you pack maps, a spare car charger for the GPS, water and a first aid kit.
- Fuel up and check tyre pressure as you’re heading out.
Seasonal extras
If you’re planning to travel in areas prone to ice or snow, you’ll need to take extra care. Investigate the destination to see if snow chains are needed, and read the National Park’s guide to driving in snowy conditions. If you are driving at night, make sure you understand black ice, what to watch for and how to respond if your car hits it. Safe driving in snow or ice also means slowing down and increasing the 3-second rule so there is plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front of you.
