Engine mounts do quite a bit more than just hold your engine in place. They provide a buffer between the engine and the vehicle body, absorbing noise and vibration to help ensure a smoother ride.
As with many other vehicle parts, there are warning signs when the engine mounts are failing. Here’s what to look out for.
1. Seeing is believing
The simplest way to check your engine mounts are in fine form is a visual check. General wear and tear is usual, but if you notice significant cracks, corrosion or warping, it’s worth having them checked out. The more significant the damage, the more chance that it will affect your engine performance.
2. Lurching into action
One common sign of a worn or damaged engine mount is a lurching motion. You might experience this when you turn off the ignition, but most often it will happen when you first start the engine and begin to accelerate.
3. Excess vibration
Engine mounts absorb usual vehicle vibrations, so when they start to fail those vibrations will be far more noticeable. You will experience more vehicle noise with the excess vibration – and you will definitely feel the difference.
4. Shifting sounds
Bangs and clunks are never a good sign. While vibration can produce a constant humming sound, you may also notice sharp noises while driving. A damaged or worn mount will not hold the engine firmly in place as required, causing it to shift position – and create those bangs and clunks.
5. Bumping along
Jolts while you’re driving or a significantly bumpier ride than usual indicated something’s not as it should be. If damaged engine mounts are the culprit, the bumps will be likely most obvious when you’re changing gears or travelling at speed, when the engine is working harder.
