Engine mounts- they may not look like much, but they play a vital role
So why are they so vital?
Engine mounts both stabilise and align a vehicle’s engine. They provide the connection between the chassis of the vehicle and the engine whilst cushioning the transmission of bumps and shocks. Virtually every car manufacturer uses rubber as the cushioning agent
Without proper stabilisation you’ll feel a lot of vibration and so will all the other vehicle parts. Without the correct alignment an engine can tilt to one side and if this becomes marked the engine will actually come to a complete stop.
So engine mounts work pretty hard in your car and don’t last forever. They will need replacing after 60,000 to 80,000 kilometers – the exact figure will depend on what sort of driving conditions you put your car through.
So how do you know when to replace them? Well we’re back to our old friend’s stabilisation and alignment again. A decrease in either will be felt through vibration. Over time the rubber starts to deteriorate; hardly surprising as that is the bit doing all the work. You’ll notice a different feel to your car when you’re driving. You may also hear clicks or clunks you haven’t heard before.
It’s always a good idea to listen for unusual noises соming from under the bonnet. An increase in vibration ѕhоuld be lооkеd into immediately аѕ that mау mеаn that the mounts are ready to be replaced.
The replacement process involves lifting the engine block to take the weight of the mounts. Whilst you can jack it up it is easier and safer to use a hoist. You’ll need a well equipped workshop for that.
Don’t delay unduly as it will only get worse and could even end with your engine becoming lose and bouncing around at high speed.
Engine mounts are available in any auto раrtѕ shop. Some people like to use the car maker’s spare parts but we all know how expensive they can be. The trick is to use a reputable brand that is made to the car maker’s specification. They are often called OEM replacement parts. They are generally of equal or better quality but with a smaller price tag. At Transgold, we are a parts specialist that has an extensive range of engine mounts for all makes and ages of vehicles. If you are wanting to replace the mounts on your vehicle, or ensure your mechanic uses the right part, speak with one of our dealers who will help you.
