Symptoms of Worn Engine Mounts

  • Symptoms of Worn Engine Mounts / Transgold

Engine mounts play a key role in any vehicle, by holding the engine in place and helping to absorb engine vibration. While they are made from steel and rubber designed to withstand force, they do have a lot of weight to carry, so they will wear and need replacing from time to time.

The symptoms of worn engine mounts are usually pretty noticeable. Here’s what to keep an eye out for.

Excess noise or movement

Certain vehicle problems have their own unique noises. In the case of worn engine mounts, keep an ear out for bangs or clunks coming from the engine bay. Usually three or four mounts hold the engine firmly in place. Once the mounts start to wear, they will loosen, which can cause the engine to shift when you drive. The movement and related noise are likely to be most obvious when you’re accelerating or when you brake suddenly.

Increased vibration

Good quality rubber in the mounts will do a great job to reduce shaking and vibration. Once the rubber starts to deteriorate, vibration increases and you’re most likely to notice that excess shaking in the cabin. If you or your passengers start to feel a lot more vibration, and especially if it gets to the stage that it’s pretty uncomfortable, then it’s definitely time to take a look at the mounts.
