There are plenty of seemingly minor car components that are critical to engine performance, and the timing belt kit is just one example! The timing belt is actually the most important belt in your engine.
Here’s what it does, why you need to replace a worn belt as soon as possible, and four signs that you may need a new timing belt kit sooner rather than later.
About the timing belt
The timing belt is a toothed belt that connects the crankshaft and camshafts, ensuring they work in unison by keeping parts moving at the same pace. Vehicles with a non-interference engine may stall if a timing belt breaks while driving, but further damage may be minimal. In cars with an interference engine, a broken belt can cause major – and costly – damage to the engine.
Indications that a new timing belt kit is required
So what do you need to watch for? Here are the four signs that your timing belt likely needs replacing:
- Difficulty starting your engine. When a timing belt wears, it can start to stretch out of shape. Once that happens, it prevents the camshaft and crankshaft lining up correctly, and it may be difficult to start your engine.
- A lack of power while driving. Belt wear can be similar to tyre wear, and in addition to a misshapen belt, you might have cracking or abrasion. The results might include noise, vibration and regularly, a noticeable loss in power while you drive.
- Vehicle age. Timing belts do wear naturally, so it’s important know what the lifespan of your timing belt is. The best bet is to check your vehicle manual to find out the recommended replacement timeframe.
- Similar to a vehicle’s age, mileage can be a good indicator that the timing belt may need replacing. This will generally be around 100,000km but it can vary based on engine size. Check your vehicle manual for recommendations.
