When Honda debuted the Accord in May 1976 not even the most optimistic executive would have dreamt of the success that this stalwart in the Honda family would bring.
The name ‘Accord’ represented Honda’s desire to create harmony between people, society and the automobile. Honda had to fight hard to keep the name ‘Accord’ after German automotive manufacturer, Opel, filed a lawsuit against Honda claiming that the name was too close to the Opel ‘Rekord’.
Starting life as a three door hatch and larger version of the compact Honda Covic, the Accord would go on to embrace and adopt a variety of shapes and sizes with the common thread being a dedication to engineering excellence that kept it on top of automotive sales chance for decades to come.
This included a 16 year stint as the best selling Japanese car and best overall import in the US between 1982 and 1997. Attention to market feedback with particular focus on fuel economy meant that the Accord came in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit local needs. This however, did not distract the Honda Engineers From establishing and maintaining a reputation and rating as one of the most reliable cars in the world.
By the eighth generation, the Japanese built Honda Accord had evolved into a mid-size car for the European markets and was also sold in Australia and New Zealand as the ‘Euro’.
The 2009 Accord Euro was introduced in 2008 had become longer, wider, sleeker and was given a sporty a look with sharper body lines and other more refined trimmings.
The facelift was well received earning the model the prestigious Wheels Car Of The Year award in 2008. The Honda Accord Euro was in production until 2015. At its peak, the Honda Accord Euro sold more than 10,000 units per annum (2005) nearly a quarter of all Honda annual sales in Australia.
